Countdown to Senior Night: The Sportscenter Generation

sportscenterThis year’s graduating class from the Boston University men’s hockey team is quite familiar with ESPN’s Sportscenter, because members of the class have been featured on it four times so far in their four years. College hockey does not get a lot of Sportscenter love (even when John Buccigross is involved), so for members of a single graduating class to appear on the iconic show multiple times is quite a feat.

As I mentioned last month, Sportscenter doesn’t have a great online video archive, so I am without video for all of one of these appearances. I have found alternative video where available.

Finding Their Identity: What the America East Championship Means to Binghamton University

The artsy, older girlfriend of the emo guitarist I had a crush on who lived on the second floor of my residence hall and I got into an argument one day back my senior year of college at Binghamton University.  We were in a friend’s car, and we were all about to go our separate ways after a Sunday afternoon brunch; I, to a Bearcats men’s basketball game, artsy girlfriend to a poetry reading, and the rest of the group to study – which meant watch cable TV with books open on their laps, the number one symptom of senioritis.

As the car prepared to turn into the gym parking lot, artsy girlfriend said to us all, filled with self-importance, “I wish people wouldn’t go to the basketball games. Binghamton doesn’t need sports.”

I took the bait. “Oh, of course we do. It puts the university on the map to the general public.”

“I didn’t hear of Binghamton through sports, ” huffed artsy girlfriend.

“Well, neither did I, but we also live in New York State. What about those in other parts of the country? They don’t know Bingo from Adam.”

“Well,” she pointed to me. “I don’t want those people, people that only find out about colleges because of their basketball teams, to come to my university. They don’t contribute anything.”

Thank you for reading my missive on Colin Wilson. You’re the better for it.

As I’m about to be published on KuklasKorner’s On The Forecheck blog regarding BU Terrier and future Nashville Predator Colin Wilson, I thought I would post a special welcome to those of you checking out my site after reading that piece. Thanks for taking a chance on me.

A little bit about me: I write primarily about college hockey, professional hockey, and lacrosse.  I have recoccuring series on NCAA compliance (Better Know a Compliance Rule), my teenage addiction to the sport of figure skating (Revisiting My Teenage Geeky Figure Skating Lovin’ Self) and an interview series (Five Questions with…)

Here are some recent blog pieces that might be of interest to you, the educated hockey fan that you are (yes, I’m sucking up to you. I have no shame.)

First off, here’s a piece I wrote about Colin Wilson being drafted last summer, and the eligibility rules that allowed him to be drafted by the Predators but still play college hockey.

Better Know a Compliance Rule #2: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

The Best Television Show You’re Also Not Watching, or My Father’s Love of Discount Stores is Hereditary

Warning: there is a little bit of an adult reference in the middle of this post. It’s pretty tame when compared to most out there these days, but I wanted to warn you all ahead of time in the event you’re the Duggar Family or something.

We all know I have a very weird taste in television programming.  Last September, I devoted an entire blog post to my favorite TV show of the moment, Connect with English.  Yes, ESL instructional programming.  But it involved Mark Consuelos (aka Kelly Ripa’s husband)! How could I not watch?

Well, dear readers, I’ll open up another page of my personal TV Guide and introduce you to another television show that you should be watching, because it brings me great joy:

An artist's rendition of Dollar Bill, from his website.

Dollar Bill’s Discount World.

Every Saturday morning, at 8am, I drag myself out of bed – despite my pure inability to stand the mornings – to watch this show on MyTV New England.  It’s a program that consists of a man in his early fifties or so – Dollar Bill – literally racing through his giant warehouse of a bargain discount warehouse store in Derry, New Hampshire, telling his viewers all of the amazing deals he has that weekend. He wears a primary-colored umbrella hat with dollar bills strung from it’s ends, which dance around his head by the gale force of power he creates by running and jumping around his store, which appears to be roughly the size of a hockey arena.

Up in the Wilds of Maine

I am heading to Orono, Maine for the second game in the weekend Boston University – Maine series. I’ll be Twittering from the game, but not as well as I did for the Beanpot, since it is Valentine’s Day and I should be paying attention to my fiance.

To see my updates, please visit http://www.twitter.com/sportsgirlkat. I don’t have my computer with me, so there won’t be an indepth recap until late Sunday when I get back.
