Is the Sports Media Turning Shawn and Nastia Into the New Michelle and Tara?

Two weeks ago, the Los Angeles Times published a pair of articles contrasting the current careers of U.S. gymnasts Shawn Johnson and Nastia Lukin. The Times spoke to the “graceful” Lukin about the three Marta Karolyi run training camps she has attended since the Beijing Olympics, and her agent about the offer she turned down from Dancing with the Stars. They then profiled a Dancing with the Stars rehearsal that Johnson, not necessarily renowned for her artistic ability as a gymnast, was participating in, quoted her mother as saying as Johnson never wants to leave the Left Coast, and mentioning that serious gymnastics training doesn’t seem to be in the cards at the moment.

The short, less artistic little kid looking to take advantage of her 15 minutes of Olympic provided fame. The lankier-only-by-comparison, more artistic, older teenager who looks to stay in the sport.

In reading the coverage this evening from Boston University winning the Hockey East Championship, I came across this photo in the Boston Herald:

I immediately thought of the following photo that I had featured in my blog last month. Wow, isn’t the above picture strangely familiar to this picture from their freshman year, isn’t it?

Your Crackberry addicted reporter reporting from the Garden last night with AWESOME HAIR.

We are back for Night #2 of the Hockey East Championship, where Boston University will be taking on the Riverhawks of UMass Lowell, the most improbable of opponents, in the championship game tonight.

Both BU and UMass Lowell advanced last night despite their frustrating inability to get a puck in the net – shots wide, shots too high, shots not high enough, all of the above. But both moved on, thanks to Northeastern taking a nap for 2 and a half periods (save for Thiessen, of course) and Boston College no longer having Nathan Gerbe (who did so much more for that team than I think we all realized.)

So I’ll be updating away from the Garden again tonight, and then tomorrow, I will give a recap of Championship weekend, including the Annual Mascot Game and Intermission Jumbotron Trivia Fail.

People Now Have Heard of Where I Went to College: My Bearcats Are Dancing

Now the rest of the country knows my little school. Binghamton University won the America East Men’s Basketball Championship yesterday, securing their first NCAA Tournament bid. Over 5,000 fans packed into the Events Center to watch the game, and the ESPN2 announcers couldn’t heap more praise onto my trusty little alma mater that could.

“I’ve covered a lot of games,” said one of the announcers. “But this has to be one of the most electric atmospheres I have ever seen for a game.”

Despite choosing my graduate school choice on solely two qualifications – it being in Boston and having a Division I hockey team – it took me until January 8, 2005 to actually attend my first Boston University hockey game. My graduate internship in the Student Activities Office had me working late most nights there was a hockey game going on, so I had to wait till a game during winter break to attend.

I dragged my then-roommate to the game, an exhibition against the USA Under-18 Team. My roommate was perplexed. “We’re not even going to see them play against another college?” I hadn’t been able to get tickets at the first game ever at Agganis – a sell out the week before – and this was the only game I knew for certain I could attend, so I told her that I had to take whatever I could get. I just wanted to get to a game.

So we settled into the sparkling new confines of the Agganis Arena, our seats right behind the BU zone and then-backup goalie Karson Gillespie, and set to watch what we both figured would be a blow out of these 17 and 18 year olds against this reportedly dominant college team.
