About
I am a freelance sports writer who contributes to SBNation Boston, Inside Lacrosse, New England Lacrosse Journal, The College Baseball Blog and Examiner. I also work with the Hockey On Campus radio show. I absolutely, positively love Twitter, and can be found tweeting all about hockey, lacrosse, football, and the like, at @sportsgirlkat. To see all of my recent writing credits, please see my Clips page.
Why I Blog
“Sports Girl: noun, girl who does NOT nag guys about their sports obsessions, but instead, often kicks their butt with her football picks; not to be confused with sports columnist Bill Simmons and his reference to Sports Gal, which is pretty much the exact opposite of a Sports Girl.”
…On Being a Sports Girl and its newest reincarnation, SportsGirlKat.com, has been published since 2003. A lifelong sports fan, I grew up in Western New York during the Buffalo Bills’ four year Super Bowl run, and spent my formative years learning to love football (and running quarterbacks, but that’s another story) from my father, and getting my young heart broken repeatedly with the rest of the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse belt.
In this blog, I cover rooting for the underdog, adapting to the crazed New England sports scene, pining for the Western New York sports of my youth, and being a self-proclaimed girly girl who loves sports in a still male-dominated world of sports fandom. I also have a unhealthy obsession with sports t-shirts, given that while growing up in the mid 1990s, I wore only sports shirts to my arts high school. They were all either huge on me or totally ridiculous looking in that special 90s way. Currently, sports t-shirts are actually made for women, fit well, and are well designed, which makes me totally envious. I also have delved head first into college hockey, particularly that of my graduate alma mater, Boston University.
I also write about higher education, social media, and give life advice to twenty-somethings (because I am everybody in my life’s “older sister”, and relish that role.) I rebranded the blog in June 2010, going from a sports only blog to one that better incorporates all of my passions. I’ll never lose the sports, but merely adding some more topics to keep it unique and current.

A Brief Legal Note
My writing on this blog is my own; it is not representative of my full-time employer or any employee of the institution I work for. The opinions and analysis reflected on the domain “www.sportsgirlkat.com” are not shared by or representative of my employer.
In non-legal terms: there is a Kat on these pages, and there is a Kat that works full-time in another field. The two are extremely different entities. This blog does not reflect my employer’s views. But, that being said, I am pretty careful about what I write, and often have trusted advisors read through anything I believe may be controversial.

Wow! A female who digs the Buffalo Bills? And Sports! I’m in love!
Signed,
Plattsburgh NY Native stuck in Denver Donkey town.
First of all the blog looks great! I’m glad I stumbled upon it. Second, good luck in the WEEI contest! I listen to that station daily so that’s cool.
Thirdly, I didn’t know how else to contact you so I’ll just post it here. I run a site that links to other gymnastics sites called Links to Gymnastics (http://www.linkstogymnastics.com)
I found your blog when I was searching the web for gymnastics and wanted to ask you if you’d like a link to your site from Links to Gymnastics.
Obviously you cover more than Gymnastics but it’s good to see the coverage amidst all the other sports.
Either way I wish you all the best!
The pics are almost as good as the words. Keep up the good work!
Thank you immensly for your blog!
I myself am a female sports blogger, and it’s a difficult road. I also wanted to thank you on your coverage on the less prominent sports. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE football as much as the next guy, but I am a student-athlete on the equestrian team at my university, and it is nice to see other sports covered. If yourself or any of your collegues would like to look at my blog I would be honored
