I’m flying Friday morning. I happen to be one of the world’s worst flyers. The only way I can get through flying is by listening to music and either drinking just enough beer to make me sleepy or taking Benadryl.

So I’m compiling my list of the songs that I’ll be blasting in my attempt to make me forget I’m on an airplane. Below I’m listing a few of the songs that made the list – each picture links to where you can purchase that specific MP3 through Amazon.com (where I buy all of my MP3s.) And through midnight on Thursday, June 30th, you can get $2.00 worth of MP3s for free through a current Amazon promotion. Free music, and you won’t have to pay a massive court appointed fine to get it!

Loud Music, Michelle Branch – Michelle Branch’s new single hopefully signals the end to her country experiment of the last few years. Not that she was bad at it (because she wasn’t), but that genre has gotten way too saturated. I need some angry, Are You Happy Now? era Michelle Branch, and this rocker delivers.

Lights, Ellie Goulding – This was one of those songs that was being brandied about as being popular and awesome, so I avoided it like the Red Sox are avoiding scoring runs against the Phillies. Then a colleague played it for my boss, who was trying to put together his own summer playlist, and I was intrigued. After listening to it a few times, I know why everyone likes it.

The Love We’re In, Barenaked Ladies – I have few weaknesses in life: coffee, margaritas, 1990s quarterbacks, the 2009 BU National Championship men’s hockey team, and Ed Robertson’s voice. Robertson, the remaining original lead singer of Barenaked Ladies, possesses a voice that only gets amazingly better with age, and in this song he is just pleading…and I just start melting…and sigh. It’s much more mature and has a much different tone than anything else on my list, but it may be one of my favorite songs of the last ten years. The number of times it’s been played on my iPod confirms it. Just give it a chance, and tell me I’m not nuts for loving this song as much as I do.

Country Girl (Shake It For Me), Luke Allen – Why do I like this song? I don’t want to like this song, I don’t know why I like this song, but I like this song. It makes me want to buy a pair of cowboy boots and wear them with my favorite denim skirt. I may just end up doing that.

Sparks Fly, Taylor Swift – Again, Taylor Swift. You’re describing what I used to scribble in journals about various crushes I had during high school and college. I am convinced my mom must have sold my teenage journals to you. However, these journals also included a variety of sports related thoughts. Miss Swift, I’ll know for sure that my mom definitely sold my journals if your next single is Why Steve Young – Jerry Rice Is A Better QB-WR Tandem Than Joe Montana – Jerry Rice. I’ll want royalties for that one.
